Telus Director - Investment and Portfolio Management in BC, Canada

Position Overview:

In this role within the Business Transformation and Operations (BTO) organization, you will leverage your leadership capabilities by inspiring change in fast-paced environments. At the core of your talents is your strength as an effective collaborator; you are able to communicate the big picture to your team and break things down into clear deliverables. Each day, you will drive efficiency to BTO financial performance through evaluating, implementing, and improving their investment management practices. Drawing from your financial, technological, and leadership expertise, you will ensure that our customers and partners experience top-notch business investment outcomes by supporting a high performing team that manages processes, frameworks and governance.


Reporting to the Vice President of Strategy and Enablement, the Director of Investment and Portfolio Management will take on many exciting roles:

  • Expert in your field:

o Support and implement a disciplined, benefits-driven investment practice for BTO capital funding that aligns with our strategic priorities of reliability and productivity

o Implement a structured approach to defining, assessing, and improving our investment management practices

  • Strong Influencer:

o Work closely with capital leadership bodies across TELUS to advance our governance practices and collaboration

o Provide leadership support to investment management experts, business analysts, and strategic resources

o Create and deliver presentations to leaders at all levels within the organization

  • Financial Whiz:

o Collaborate with BTO leaders to drive continual improvements and efficiencies in BTO financial performance, value for money and the benefits driven from our investments

o Leverage a lean governance model to efficiently and accurately manage our capital and third-party maintenance budgets

  • Change Leader:

o Utilize your negotiation and conflict resolution skills to motivate and adapt your team to roadblocks and change

o Champion program leadership excellence using experience, best practices, and repeatable processes

o Lead, develop and sustain a high performance culture by motivating, coaching, and recognizing team members

Required Knowledge:

  • Strong financial management skills and business acumen

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of project and program management

  • Knowledge of Lean (Lean Startup), Value Stream Mapping and Process Improvement practices

  • Experience in defining and leveraging KPIs and scorecards to drive results

  • Knowledge of Telecom business operations, business drivers and customers (wireless & wireline; consumer, business & government) is a plus

  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint)

  • A proven track record of leading teams and developing cross-functional relationships to deliver operational and client focused programs

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and a flexible style to lead, motivate, and influence all levels of decision makers, clients and team members

  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills to breakdown and simplify complex, ambiguous problems

  • Ability to structure and facilitate workshops, conduct insight gathering interviews

  • Highly developed personal planning and organizational skills to effectively set priorities

  • Ability to meet deliverables and work with minimal guidance

Required Education/Certification/Designation:

  • Engineering, Computer Science or Business degree

  • Accounting designation is a plus

Required Experience:

  • 10 or more years of experience leading a team

  • 5 or more years of experience in a governance or program leadership role

  • Experience leading transformational programs, preferably in Telecom or IT

  • Experience with leading governance processes, financial management, and implementing investment frameworks

  • Experience with organizational change management and driving culture change
