Electrocardiograph (ECG) Technician, Specimen Procurement

Full-Time Position; Rotating Shifts (Including 24/7 shifts)


The ECG Technician prepares and conducts a variety of cardiac tests in response to physician orders for inpatients and outpatients at KGH. The Technician is responsible for providing patient instruction and documentation and will also assist the Echo Sonographer as required.

Within this role, the employee is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston General Hospital strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.


  • Assists with exercise stress Echos and Dobutamine stress Echos in the Echo department.

  • Operates the electrocardiograph machine and Holter recorder in either the patient’s room or in the ECG Department.

  • Collects discs early each morning from all hospital patient care departments.

  • Performs daily download of hospital ECG machines.

  • Maintains expertise by regular participation in ongoing educational activities.

  • Identifies specific learning needs through annual self, peer, physician and managerial review of knowledge base, technique and performance.

  • Maintains a processional environment in the workplace by regularly cleaning and organizing of ECG workroom

  • Keeps equipment and work space clean and tidy by following department protocols and infection control policies.

  • Follows departmental and hospital policies and procedures

  • Ensures patient privacy and safety at all times

  • Adheres to worker responsibilities as set out in the Occupational Health & Safety Act, hospital safety policies, and dept/unit established procedures at all times.


  • Graduate from a recognized program in ECG Technology.

  • Cardiology Technician with extensive training in ECG completion and stress testing.

  • Canadian Society of Cardiac Technologist Certification preferred.

  • Minimum one year recent and related experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize significant cardiac arrhythmias, variations in wave morphology and electrocardiographic signs of myocardial ischemia/infarction on ECG’s.

  • Good working knowledge of computers and database management.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated initiative and professionalism.

  • Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Proven ability to attend work punctually and regularly.

  • Satisfactory criminal reference check required.
