The Positioin:

There is a current requirement for a Senior Manager, Medical Affairs.

To manage, motivate, coach and provide leadership to the Hematology/Oncology regional medical liaisons. To lead the training efforts for Medical Affairs across all therapeutic areas, including initial onboarding of new team members. To be a trusted partner, valued for the delivery of high quality clinical and scientific evidence, knowledge and support to external thought leaders, healthcare professionals and internal Celgene colleagues.

Functional Management Responsibilities:

Management & Development:

  • Provide coaching, feedback and mentoring to the RMLs including frequent 1:1s and team meetings to ensure direct reports are fully supported in the delivery of their day to day work.

  • Direct management responsibility for the RMLs including performance management, goal/objective and development plan setting and appraisal reviews.

  • Continues to build on the strength of the Hematology/Oncology therapeutic area RML teams, and leads RML talent acquisition, retention of talents and succession planning for the team.

  • Responsible for identifying and resolving the Hematology/Oncology therapeutic area operational needs/issues and processes of the RMLs and sharing best practices.

  • Support RML team through IIT process to ensure local and global ODQ concept alignment.

  • Accountable for the quality and consistency of scientific and medical knowledge of RMLs within Hematology/Oncology.

  • Ensures RMLs are assigned as necessary to meet the needs of the therapeutic area initiatives such as: Conference attendance/support, Advisory Boards, Regional Consultancy Meetings, Medical Booths, Educational Events etc.

Strategy:

  • Support therapeutic area medical strategy through the development of processes and capabilities that optimize the delivery of scientific services to internal stakeholders and external customers.

  • Work closely with the regional sales managers to ensure optimal alignment of field resources in delivering therapeutic area goals and objectives in a compliant manner

  • Ensures execution of the Medical Affairs therapeutic area field tactical and operational plans

Compliance:

  • Ensures compliance with local regulatory rules and the company corporate standards of practice and local Canadian work practices.

Training:

  • Responsible for developing, evaluating and delivering core training and on-boarding program for all Medical Affairs RMLs across all therapeutic areas to ensure that educational excellence is achieved.

  • Works closely with the Director of Hematology/Oncology Medical Affairs to create and support the education of the therapeutic area RML team at the Plan of Action (POA) meetings.

  • Attend cross-functional POAs and support training and tactical planning process for the RML and cross functional teams for these meetings.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Effectively partners with cross-functional team members.

  • Attends appropriate national and international scientific meetings to maintain his/her awareness of research activities within the therapeutic area.

  • Attend and support consultancy meetings or advisory boards when appropriate and when required

  • Presents monthly updates to applicable cross-functional partners and therapeutic business reviews at therapeutic area Medical Affairs Team Meetings as requested

  • In collaboration with RMLs, establish customer contact with opinion leaders related to key therapeutic area initiatives

  • Support therapeutic area brand planning efforts as a member of the cross functional Therapeutic Area Team (TAT)

Qualifications

Prerequisites:

Education and Experience:

  • Scientific degree: MSc, PhD, Pharm D, RN, MD with minimum 5 years of experience in biopharmaceutical industry; Hematology/Oncology experience preferred.

K nowledge & Skills Required:

  • Strong people management skills and demonstrated ability to attract, retain and develop top talent in the Medical Affairs discipline

  • Excellent communication, presentation and time management skills required; must be adaptable and able to work well within a team and relate effectively with people at all levels of the organization

  • Ability to inspire a team to excel by fostering a climate of energy, excitement and personal accountability

  • Demonstrated leadership in ambiguous situations

  • Demonstrated scientific/clinical acumen

  • Current working knowledge of Canadian legal, regulatory, and compliance regulations and guidelines pertinent to pharmaceutical development

Working Conditions:

  • Field based role, within a reasonable commuting distance to Celgene Inc. office in Mississauga. Incumbent will be required to travel 65% of the time, and also come in to head office fairly regularly.
