Walmart Safety Manager - Transportation in Mississauga, Ontario

The primary function of the Safety manager is to; develop, implement, and manage company safety programs, policies, and procedures. Must be aware of Federal, Provincial and local safety laws to ensure the company complies with all current safety regulations. Coordinates safety traffic programs and instructs truck and trailer drivers in matters pertaining to traffic and safety regulations and care of equipment.

  • Review all prospective drivers CVOR, experience, road test results driving qualifications. Conducts a thorough orientation with new drivers to ensure knowledge/compliance with general trucking regulations as well as Walmart Fleet ULC. guidelines and procedures outlined in the driver’s manual. A checklist to be completed on each new driver. Maintain current driver information records. Coordinates quarterly driver meetings to discuss safety issues & discuss opportunities to improve safety

  • Reviews Health and Safety trends and initiates improvements to reduce hazards and prevent reoccurrences. Works with Managers to respond to JHSC written recommendations. Establishes and monitors regular communication of Health and Safety information, which includes updated information, training, etc. Makes recommendations and ensures the on-the-job Health and Safety Program is effective and maintained

  • Complies and reviews reports from the different departments on incidents/accidents and implements initiatives to reduce reoccurrences. Periodically attends accident/incident scene to support associates and gather and maintains information. Communicates insurance claim information

  • Participates in daily workplace inspections to highlight and address safety concerns and provides visible evidence of interest, involvement and commitment to the Health and Safety Program. This includes walks through the workplace and equipment to ensure employees comply with safe working practices. Investigates and reports incidents including; accidents, injuries, complaints, near misses, misconduct, infractions, and other violations of company policies and procedures. Decides upon the appropriate action to be taken in order to correct substandard acts or conditions. Follows up to ensure the action was completed and effective.

  • Facilitates safety training programs and ensures their effective implementation. This includes, WHMIS, MSDS, Emergency Evacuation, JSPs, Appropriate Workplace Behaviour, etc. Participates in the Occupational Health and Safety Competency Training for Supervisors provided by IHSA

  • Leads a team of (3) Driver trainers. Planning, scheduling and reviewing daily operations of the training team. Supporting driver in cab evaluations and road observations. Support asset team in review of DVIR's for safety concerns

  • Review and mentor drivers regarding log reports to ensure proper completion to minimize careless errors as required. Follow up and take necessary actions for various compliance infractions (HOS, Speed, CVSA inspections etc.

  • Visit stores and vendors to where safety/compliance concerns exist. Prepare/report and develop plan to mitigate concern.

  • College certificate or diploma required, Member of Council of Drivers designation required.

  • Minimum of 6-8 years experience required.

  • Certificate in Fleet Management in the transportation industry.

  • For training purpose an AZ license is preferred.

  • Advanced knowledge of Health and Safety including Occupational Health and Safety Legislation, Occupational Hygiene, Measurement and Analysis, Hazard Recognition, Assessment and Control, and Workers’ Compensation Case Management; Health and Safety techniques; and Distribution Center Operations including in-depth understanding of the Company’s policies and practicesWorking knowledge of transportation laws and risk management.

  • Communication skills including written (reports) and verbal.

  • Basic keyboarding skills using a PC and general knowledge of Email, word processing and spreadsheet experience.

  • Supervision of staff on a daily basis; ability to lead, motivate and manage a team.

  • Time management skills including an ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines under pressure.
