Position Summary:

The big data revolution is here. According to Wikipedia, humans gathered about 2.5 exabytes of data per day in 2012 and that rate is increasing rapidly. Hidden in that data could be medical breakthroughs, the secret to accurate long term weather forecasts, a better understanding of our universe, new techniques for combating crime, a better understanding of climate change, valuable business trends and more.

Distributed databases spread the data and the processing work over hundreds or thousands of servers that may be in the same room or on different continents. This is a challenging problem. As the number of servers increases it becomes more and more difficult to ensure that query results remain consistent without compromising performance. With so many servers working together failures in both networks and computer hardware are inevitable and algorithms must deal with these seamlessly. Your job will be to help us solve difficult problems like these.

In this position you will design and implement solutions in C and Python. You will:

  • gain experience programming in C

  • learn about distributed systems

  • learn about in-memory and distributed database systems

  • learn about cutting edge data structures and algorithms

  • be mentored by an experienced supervisor who wants to see you learn, grow and succeed

Skills & Qualifications:

Successful applicants will have an exceptional ability to learn and the motivation to excel in software design, implementation, and testing.

The following qualifications are required:

  • Strong programming skills in C or C

  • Good oral communication skills

  • Overall average of at least 80%

  • Ability to work independently

  • Strong problem solving skills

The following are not required but would be valuable:

  • Knowledge of Python programming

  • Knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts

  • Knowledge of Networking (TCP/IP), distributed systems, databases and/or multithreading

  • Work experience at a software development company

  • Academic research experience

  • Software design experience

  • Significant hobby programming
