Shred-it Director, PR & Communications in Oakville, Ontario

SUMMARY

Working as a key member of the Marketing department as the Marketing Communications lead, this role will manage the planning, development and implementation of internal and external communications strategies and programs for Shred-it, with the goal of helping to maintain a favorable image of the brand along with exemplifying Shred-it’s thought-leadership position in the industry with internal and external stakeholders, including the media.

This role will contribute to the overall engagement of team members by managing, developing, implementing and evaluating effective internal communication strategies. This position will also be accountable for the brand’s global PR reputation through managing proactive and reactive Public Relations (PR) strategies, along with Social Media strategy and Marketing Communications.

_ SPECIFIC DUTIES_

Internal Communications

  • Strategically aligns communications with long term corporate objectives. Plans, develops and manages internal communications strategies, programs and tactics to facilitate open communication, encourage team member engagement and to educate and inform major audiences about key priorities within the Shred-it/SCS business division.

  • Oversees content development for all Shred-it divisional communication vehicles, inlcuding the divisional bi-monthly magazine.

  • Manages communications activities and distirbution to ensure that key messages are being communicated in a timely way and with the utmost integrity in the languages of the countries in which the Shred-it brand exists.

  • Provides strategic counsel and supports requested corporate communication requirements of senior management team which includes message development, vehicle selection, and content development.

  • Establishes relationships and manages the activities of a variety of outside service partners including translators and other agency partners to ensure that the company achieves its communications objectives in a cost-effective manner.

  • Ensures internal communications are aligned with change management principles and practices to ensure clarity and support for both business objectives and team member needs.

Crisis Communications

  • Manages and provides strategic PR counsel and support execution for Shred-it crisis communications.

  • Triage and handles media calls regarding Shred-it after normal business hours, as necessary.

  • Develops and implements a global, corporate-wide Crisis Communications Policy.

Public Relations

  • Provides strategic counsel in regards to the PR direction and strategy through analyzing and monitoring communications and PR needs and issues.

  • Manages global PR team to create and develop the annual global media/pr program and calendar.

  • Develops and implements proactive media placement designed to enhance the Shred-it brand globally.

  • Commissions or undertakes the management of relevant market research, globally.

  • Manages and develops key PR tools and initiatives such as press releases, infographics, white papers, research reports and other in North America.

  • Manages the relationship with the company’s designated PR firm(s).

  • Evaluates PR Campaigns and generates KPIs and results for tracking and future planning, on a monthly and quarterly basis.

  • Manages the PR and Communications budget.

  • Reactively manages messages as required to protect the brand from any negative publicity.

  • Manages media inquiries and interview requests; provides strategic recommendations and is responsible for facilitating the briefing of appropriate spokespeople and setting up interviews.

  • Manages Marketing Communications initiatives and content designed to generate brand awareness, drive business opportunities and stimulate lead generation for the organization.

  • Oversees the Company’s Social Media Strategy and Social Media team across all social media platforms, ensuring social is fully integrated with all other Marketing efforts.

Education

  • University Degree in Public Relations/Journalism/Communications, or a related field of study.

Experience

  • Minimum 8 to 10 years of professional and proven working experience in internal communications and public relations.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Demonstration of effective corporate communication programs that have been well planned, managed and implemented.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills. Exceptional writing and editing skills, as evidenced by past experience and writing samples.

  • Well versed in public relations, crisis communications and internal communications best practices.

  • Able to excel in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities, and able to take a positive and collaborative approach with multiple stakeholders, internal and external.

  • Experience working with US, Canadian and UK markets; international media experience

a plus.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, sound judgement and decision-making skills.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Experience managing and working with external agencies, consultants and suppliers.

  • Experience providing counsel and support to executives.

  • Strong knowledge and application of change management principles in communications work.

Other:

Approxiamitely 10% travel to support public relations / communications initiatives.
