The Global Solutions Delivery Database Administration (GSDDBA) team, comprised of onshore and offshore members, is tasked with providing enterprise class, robust, leading edge database solutions and support globally for the entire Group Functions and Investment Division of Manulife. This includes Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and cloud-based data environments.

In this essential role, the Database Administrator (DBA) will participate in key projects and initiatives that provide efficient and secure database solutions with a focus on Oracle. Some of the primary responsibilities of this role include owning, tracking and resolving database related incidents and alerts, fulfilling service requests, and reviewing service related reports (e.g. database backups, maintenance, monitoring). Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for tuning the environments. This includes recommendations at the instance and the application levels.

  • Perform technical trouble shooting and consulting to development teams.

  • Interface with Oracle Corporation for technical support.

  • Disaster Recovery Planning and execution.

  • Patch Management and Version Control

  • Establish appropriate end-user database access control levels.

  • Coordinate all Oracle database requests, follow through on requests.

  • Analyze and develop innovative solutions for complex problems involving availability and/or performance at the system level. Work with vendors to resolve problems.

  • Interact with customers and provide leadership in developing and recommending solutions to business problems of high complexity.

  • Proactively monitor health of servers in production, test and development environments

  • Create and maintain procedural and operational scripts and documentation, disaster recovery plans and other documentation that relates to database operating procedures

  • Maintains technical currency in database, data management, and financial industry trends through research/education/self-motivated training and personal development

  • Mentors and educates colleagues with respect to database design and implementation practices

  • Possible requirement to actively participate in an after-hours on call rotation, with carrying a pager and participating on Sev1 incident calls

  • Acts as a participant to project and application management teams to promote standards and best practices, provide estimates, and plan and manage database activities on deliverables

  • Updates and communicates project status to management and users

  • Develop and maintain project database documentation, including installation working instructions, configuration details, and production support handbooks

  • Solid experience upgrading and maintaining Oracle 12c & 11gR2 Real Application Clusters (RAC) and Standalone databases in Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) Engineered system.

  • Solid experience building, troubleshooting, and maintaining Oracle Data Guard and Data Guard Broker.

  • Solid experience in backup and recovery using Recovery Manager (RMAN) and Data Pump.

  • Experience working with different storage systems such as ASM, ACFS and TSM.

  • Experience installing, troubleshooting and managing Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c.

  • Hands-on experience with partitioning, parallel processing, and performance tuning (Execution Plan, Baselines, Statistics, AWR/ADDM, tracing).

  • Hands-on experience with Unix (Red Hat & Oracle Linux, AIX) commands, OS performance tuning utilities, and Shell Scripting.

  • Excellent knowledge of SQL, PL/SQL best practices and Oracle flashback concepts.

  • Good understanding of network & DNS.

  • Good understanding of Information Security and Change Management Processes.

  • 5 years’ experience, including several years supporting database environments

  • Degree in computer science, information systems, business, mathematics or equivalent

  • Strong understanding of relational database structures, theories, principles and practices

  • Proven diagnostic, analytical, and problem solving skills, can confidently handle critical incidents

  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database issues such as integrity, performance, blocking, deadlocking, replication, log shipping, connectivity, security, etc.

  • Strong knowledge of indexes, index management, integrity checks, configuration, statistics

  • Able to develop a solid DR plan and contribute to a business continuity plan

  • Understand IT controls and standards in performing IT risk and control assessments

  • Documentation skills for processes and procedures ( creating KBs, runbooks, topology etc )

  • Experience in implementing operational automation using scripts

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools

  • Knowledge of scripting languages (Unix shell, PERL, .Net, windows shell scripting)

  • Exposure to financial services, large corporate environments comparable to Manulife Financial.

  • Ability to identify trends via meaningful reporting and metrics resulting in developing action plans.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Oracle Hyperion is an asset.

  • Exposure to scheduling tools such as CAWA, Control-M is an asset.

  • Experience with to Service Now is an asset.

  • Exposure to SQL Server 2016/2012/2008 is an asset.

  • Exposure to MS Azure IaaS is an asset.

  • Canadian financial services industry knowledge is an asset.

  • Oracle OCP or similar certification is an asset.

  • Working knowledge of investments, insurance industry, compliance and regulatory requirements

  • Experience with the full project lifecycle from conception to implementation & support

  • Ability to define upgrade paths and capacity planning requirements

  • Can provide overall direction for the database environment

  • Project management skills.
