The Global Solutions Delivery Database Administration (GSD-DBA) team, comprised of onshore and offshore members, is tasked with providing enterprise class, robust, leading edge database solutions and support globally for the entire Group Functions and Investment Division of Manulife. This includes Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and cloud-based data environments.

In this essential role, the Database Administrator (DBA) will participate in key projects and initiatives that provide efficient and secure database solutions with a focus on Microsoft SQL Server and data warehouses. Some of the primary responsibilities of this role include owning, tracking and resolving database related incidents and alerts, fulfilling service requests, and reviewing service related reports (e.g. database backups, maintenance, monitoring). Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for tuning the environments. This includes recommendations at the instance and the application levels.

Responsibilities

  • Database administration for Manulife-hosted applications on MS SQL Server 2008 / 2012 / 2014 with particular skills in data warehouse design, build and maintain

  • Proactively monitor health of servers in production, test and development environments

  • Ensure availability, quality and performance of databases to support business requirements

  • Monitor and review scheduled jobs and other processes

  • Diagnose and correct database failure conditions, escalating problems as appropriate

  • Perform database backups and restores

  • Ensure optimal application performance via proper database maintenance and tuning

  • Implementation of database change requests and new releases as required

  • Create and maintain procedural and operational scripts and documentation, disaster recovery plans and other documentation that relates to database operating procedures

  • Maintains technical currency in database, data management, and financial industry trends through research/education/self-motivated training and personal development

  • Mentors and educates colleagues with respect to database design and implementation practices

  • Execute data model and database code reviews, provide constructive feedback and follow-up

  • Possible requirement to actively participate in an after-hours on call rotation, with carrying a pager and participating on Sev1 incident calls

  • Acts as a participant to project and application management teams to promote standards and best practices, provide estimates, and plan and manage database activities on deliverables

  • Updates and communicates project status to management and users

  • Responsible for design, development, maintenance and documentation of data flows as they relate to the database

  • Develop and maintain project database documentation, including installation working instructions, configuration details, and production support handbooks

  • 5 years’ experience, including several years supporting large clustered database environments and data warehouses

  • In-depth Knowledge of SQL Server 2008/2012/2014 along with the data management tools

  • Degree in computer science, information systems, business, mathematics or equivalent

  • Strong understanding of relational database structures, theories, principles and practices

  • Proven diagnostic, analytical, and problem solving skills, can confidently handle critical incidents

  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database issues such as integrity, performance, blocking, deadlocking, replication, log shipping, connectivity, security, etc.

  • Experience in performance tuning, query optimization, using Performance Monitor, SQL Profiler and other related monitoring and troubleshooting tools

  • Strong knowledge of indexes, index management, integrity checks, configuration, statistics

  • Ability to detect and resolve contention for SQL Server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space

  • Strong knowledge of backups, restores, recovery models, database shrink operations, DBCC commands, clustering, database mirroring, replication

  • Able to develop a solid DR plan and contribute to a business continuity plan

  • Familiar with advanced database features (always on high-availability, high-end storage solution)

  • Familiar with operating systems, tools and architecture as they relate to database environments

  • Understand IT controls and standards in performing IT risk and control assessments

  • SQL Server tool knowledge (Profiler, DTA, SSMS, SAC, SSCM, PerfMon, DMVs, system sprocs)

  • Ability to write/debug SQL (stored procs, functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes, constraints)

  • Documentation skills for processes and procedures ( creating KBs, runbooks, topology etc )

  • Experience in implementing operational automation using scripts (Powershell, VBScript, WSH)

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools

  • Knowledge of scripting languages (Unix shell, PERL, .Net, windows shell scripting)

  • Exposure to financial services, large corporate environments comparable to Manulife Financial.

  • Ability to identify trends via meaningful reporting and metrics resulting in developing action plans.

Nice to have:

  • Current on 3rd party DBA tools and applications ( e.g Idera, redgate, Foglight, SCOM, Erwin )

  • MCDBA / MCT certification

  • Familiar with meta data, modeling and data architecture - concepts and tools

  • Knowledge of SQL Server Integration Services, Reporting Services and Analysis Services

  • Working knowledge of investments, insurance industry, compliance and regulatory requirements

  • Experience with the full project lifecycle from conception to implementation & support

  • Ability to define upgrade paths and capacity planning requirements

  • Can provide overall direction for the database environment

  • Project management skills.

  • Knowledge of Investment specific solutions (Eagle Systems, Charles River, Portia, Bloomberg,…)
