Investment Division Overview

Manulife's Investment Division manages the Company’s General Fund on-balance sheets assets (GA) and through Manulife Asset Management, manages assets for institutional clients and investment funds in key markets around the world. Manulife Asset management also provides investment management services to affiliates’ retail clients through product offerings of Manulife and John Hancock. The Division manages a broad range of investments including public and private bonds, public and private equities, mortgages, real estate, oil and gas, infrastructure, timberland, farmland and asset allocation strategies. The Division has physical presence in key international financial centers, including Canada, the United States, Hong Kong, Japan, the United Kingdom, Australia and throughout South East Asia. The Investment Division is a significant market player with more than C$650 billion in assets under management.

Overview of the Role

The Chief Data Office in close partnership with key business stakeholders, Global Investment Operations and Information Services will support the transformation of the organization to ensure data is leveraged as a strategic asset supporting our business goals. The group’s objectives include:

  • A single, central source for data which is easy to access and describes how the data was obtained

  • Data quality continually monitored and accuracy improved

  • Common standards and policies for data governance

  • Flexible reporting tools to access data and adapt to changing business or regulatory requirements

Reporting to the AVP, Head of Data Design, the Director, Data Design will be a key member of a senior team of data professionals responsible for establishing the data design program that ensures data workflows are designed efficiently and in a flexible manner to enable business capabilities. They will couple their data design experience with a solid understanding of the Investment Division’s business and operations to implement the data strategy.


  • Develop process to map current and future data workflows from source systems to end users

  • Develop process to redesign data workflows and processes to ensure they are transparent, simplified, automated and well-controlled to improve efficiency and mitigate risk

  • Develop process to identify Critical Data Elements (CDEs)

  • Lead process to develop business requirements for data assets and associated tools

  • Lead process to develop prototypes and foundational requirements

  • Contribute to a strong partnership with Data Management & Delivery

  • Liaise with business partners to ensure their requirements are identified and incorporated into tactical and strategic solutions

  • Create and maintain a central inventory of the Investment Division’s data assets

  • Develop and document Business Glossaries and metrics for relevant data domains in close collaboration with Data Governance and Quality functions

  • Deliver tactical response to data-related business issues; monitor, report and own issue to resolution

  • Contribute to the development and execution of the division’s data strategy that enables the most effective use of the data assets

  • Ensure data is available, reliable, consistent, accessible, secure, and timely to support the mission and activities of the division

  • Support the successful implementation of the Global Optimization initiatives

  • Collaborate with all groups within the Chief Data Office to ensure alignment across data functions and on target delivery of the group’s goals


  • Promote organizational excellence through development of a culture of accountability, innovation and teamwork

  • Utilize innovative approaches to solve business data problems

Note: This role can be based in Toronto, Montreal or Boston

  • Undergraduate degree in business, economics, or a quantitative discipline with asset management or financial services industry experience; CFA preferred

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant business experience

  • Previous experience with the development and implementation of data design programs

  • Previous experience in the development and implementation of large, firm-wide processes

  • Strong leadership and communication skills

  • Constructive challenge and influencing skills

  • Experience in translating between business and technology

  • Champion of change and effectively managing the implementation of new ideas / improvements

  • Confident when dealing with investment professionals, senior management and other stakeholders

  • Knowledge and experience with asset management systems and platforms such as trading/order management, portfolio accounting, client reporting, performance analytics and master data management

  • Proficient in Word, Excel, Visio and PowerPoint

  • Highly analytical with strong consulting and problem solving abilities; tenacity to identify the root cause of problems is essential
