BMO Financial Group Audit Analyst in Ontario, Canada


Under the direction of the Director/Senior Audit Manager/Audit Manager, the Audit Analyst is accountable to support the audit team in performing a high quality and efficient audit. An affective audit function provides vital assurance to the Board of Directors and senior management as to the quality and effectiveness of the internal control system and in so doing helps reduce the risk of loss and reputational damage to the Enterprise. The function is instrumental in identifying high risk circumstances that could lead to material impact on profitability or reputation. The Analyst conducts elements of audit engagements under supervision.

Contributing to the sustainability of a strong internal audit practice, demonstrating a high performance culture which embeds the “Our Way” principles.

Contributing through direct actions to Corporate Audit’s stature and independence within the Enterprise.

Proactively identify changing strategies, tactics, risks and initiatives to deliver audit and investigative services with the appropriate focus.

Provide fair and balanced insights into current, emerging, and potential issues, themes, trends and opportunities that will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of control processes.

Maintain the independence of the audit practice and its personnel.

Conduct an audit practice viewed by the Board, management and regulators as meeting expectations.

Continue to advance the professional practice to enhance the assurance model, and the nature and quality of insights.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Proactively identify changing strategies, tactics, risks and initiatives continuously following the appropriate audit and investigative services with the appropriate focus.

o Develop awareness of key business strategies, tactics, risks and initiatives.

o Execute assigned audit procedures with the recognition of the risks of the auditee which encompass the inherent risks, control risks and internal/external environmental and regulatory risks.

  • Provide fair and balanced insights into current, emerging and potential issues, trends and opportunities that will enhance efficiency and effectiveness of management and the enabling control processes.

o Identify control deficiencies while providing a fair and balanced assessment of findings from the application of audit procedures.

  • Deliver high quality work.

o Maintain a working knowledge of the industry, of the auditee, the regulatory and broad economic environment availing the auditee of the knowledge as to the development of new strategies and tactical plans and opportunities.

o Ensure that audits procedures executed are conducted to the high standards set out by Corporate Audit.

o Apply sound judgement in the execution of the assigned work.

o Ensure open and effective lines of communication are maintained with the auditee.

o Efficiently execute such sections of the audit as assigned.

o Conduct such projects as may be assigned by the Director/Senior Audit Manager.

o Continue to advance capabilities through participation in internal/external training opportunities.

o Support the culture within Corporate Audit.

o Continue to develop knowledge of audit practices/methodology and banking practices.

Continually advance the professional practice.

o Assist in advancing Corporate Audit’s overall practice through insights on methodology.


Knowledge and Skills

A. Knowledge:

Undergraduate degree or equivalent with 2-4 years of direct relevant experience in an audit function or business/corporate function.

Graduate degree and/or professional/business designation is desirable/helpful.

Working toward a professional/business designation.

Developing knowledge in internal controls and risk assessment.

Developing knowledge of trends and best practices in internal control and business of the assigned LOB.

Developing knowledge of their assigned centre of competency (subject matter).

B. Skills

Working level interpersonal, relationship management and communication skills.

Working level planning and organizing skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Introductory level leadership and managerial skills.

Working level negotiation, influencing and conflict resolution skills.

Good analytical skills.
