BMO Financial Group Business Intelligence Associate in Ontario, Canada


To support the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of analytical and reporting tools/technology and an accompanying SQL data warehouse for the Capital Markets Business Intelligence team.

Client Services and Reporting – Weighting: 55

  • Develop and implement new reporting for Investment and Corporate Banking and Trading Products

  • Utilize technical skills to efficiently and effectively extract and manipulate data from client databases or other source systems to meet various reporting needs (e.g. weekly, monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc reports)

  • Understand the business rationale of all requests being made

  • Manage client expectations, and meet agreed upon deadlines; produce work that is timely and accurate. Strive to provide great customer service and anticipate follow-up inquiries

  • Question the integrity of data; delve into data issues raised and work with Operations / Technology to fix at the source considering the implication on any other data that would be similarly impacted

  • Provide technical support to team members for various reporting and analytical applications and tools

  • Participate in and contribute to project and team meetings, interacting and collaborating with team members and other departments, as appropriate, in order to understand project requirements

Analytical Insights and Observations – Weighting: 25

  • Leads in the design, development, testing, and implementation of enhancements to existing databases and/or creation of new databases

  • Employ advanced analytical tools for mining data and developing predictive analytics

  • Utilize knowledge of CM’s businesses, products, and risk measures to provide insight and analysis in support of LOB performance and strategic objectives

  • Perform detailed financial and business analysis as necessary to support Capital Markets

  • Understand the business processes and data flow of the source / intermediary systems underpinning the MIS to fulfill reporting / analytics responsibilities

Process Efficiencies – Weighting: 20

  • Leverage existing reports and business metrics reported where possible to minimize unnecessary work

  • Assess current practice of generating reports and introduce process efficiencies / automation in database and reporting

  • Perform database and application tuning


  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Computer Science, with 3 - 7 years of relevant work experience. MBA or equivalent business education as asset.

  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of T-SQL for writing queries and procedures

  • Proficiency in MS Office, MSBI, VBA

  • Possesses knowledge of Microsoft Business Intelligence best practices

  • Knowledge of MDX, C# is an asset

  • Possesses advanced knowledge of report/analytic creation, publishing and distribution

  • Knowledge of advanced statistical packages, such as “R”, SAS

  • Possesses some understanding of business requirements and the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)

  • Solid understanding of data warehouse design, data modeling, business intelligence concepts, and business processes

  • Demonstrates understanding of relevant and emerging database technologies and tools

  • Understanding of Capital Markets products

  • Understanding of financial accounting concepts

  • Effective self-starter with a can-do attitude who takes ownership and accountability for project deliverables with a demonstrated ability to multitask

  • A customer and results focused attitude

  • Solid communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organization / time management skills
