Mandate

The primary mandate of this role is to build a solid reputation in the industry as a leader in employee development, retention, recruitment and placement as part of the broader BMO CM Professional Development team.

Working directly for the Global Head of BMO CM Professional Development, the incumbent will be responsible for working closely with the Investment & Corporate Banking business to ensure junior professionals (Analysts and Associates in Investment & Corporate Banking Group) are receiving the guidance and support to have a successful career within the Bank of Montreal Capital Markets (BMO CM) group.

This broad and diverse management role is responsible for overseeing and executing the highest level of professional services and operational support and effectively teaming with team members and key corporate partners. The incumbent must also be an effective communicator who possesses the highest level of integrity, is adept at personal dynamics, and in managing matters that are both sensitive and confidential.

The key accountabilities will include working with the Global Head of Professional Development, Human Resources, the BMO CM Campus Recruiting team, BMO CM Global Learning team (within the BMO CM Professional Development) and the Investment & Corporate Banking Group (, recruiting committee, desk heads and the TP Rotational Program Sponsor) in selecting and placing FT interns into the 16-24 month program, ensuring that sufficient resources are allocated across Investment & Corporate Banking Group.

The individual is also responsible for monitoring the interns’ progress through each rotation including meeting monthly with interns and checking in with Desk Managers three times during a rotation to ensure rotation objectives have been set and monitoring the performance of the interns against those objectives.

Role also includes identifying the key criteria and areas of development throughout the program for the junior professionals. Incumbent will also be responsible for supporting the junior professionals to ensure they are receiving the proper coaching, training and mentoring throughout their career once they exit the intern program.

In addition to the FT program, the incumbent will also be responsible for onboarding and management of the coop and summer intern programs in TP. This position may require travel during peak recruiting periods across the BMO CM offices.

Key Accountabilities

The incumbent is responsible for supporting the management, career development and retention of the junior professional team for Investment & Corporate Banking Group. Working with the Global Head of Professional Development, the TP business, Human Resources and BMO CM Campus Recruiting team to build and retain a team of highly qualified, diverse and successful junior professionals.

The incumbent will perform an integral coordinator role in managing the junior professional group as well as managing and administering the on boarding and development events/activities for all Investment & Corporate Banking new hires (summer, coop and FT). As an individual with a sound understanding of the business, the incumbent will have the credibility with potential candidates, existing junior professionals and the Investment & Corporate Banking leadership team. This role requires both tactical leadership and management capabilities. More specifically, the incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Building theInvestment & Corporate Bankingfull time rotational Intern class(es) to ensure they have the world class skills, tools and processes necessary to deliver outstanding service and to, become solid candidates for full time offers to theInvestment & Corporate BankingProducts Group.

  • Acting as a trusted advisor and mentor to the junior professionals, and as a partner to the Program Sponsor and desk heads by providing an TP-wide perspective and work with Global Head of Professional Development to develop forward-thinking strategies to address the broader groups junior staffing needs.

  • Improving retention by addressing the junior professionals’ issues and concerns as well as focusing on their technical and career development, thereby achieving high job satisfaction.

  • Providing career development coaching and the conducting of knowledgeable career discussions, providing insights for future career endeavors including internal opportunities (both in and outside of TP as relevant), external referrals and professional networking contacts.

  • Acting as a central point person and champion for junior professionals as they grow within the organization. The incumbent will work closely with each rotational Manager and day to day Desk Manager, program sponsor in the assessment of employees and in providing regular feedback.

  • Working closely with the I&CB PD leads, Human Resources and the BMO CM Global Learning team to provide input and support regarding the development of a “best-in-class” on boarding and training program which continues to support further development of the junior professionals after their completion of the initial training program

  • Manage on-boarding of and ongoing communication with the junior professionals, having them contribute to and be part of a larger peer group as well as being integrated into their respective rotational assignments.

  • Ensuring that Diversity initiatives are reinforced in the management of junior professionals, recruitment strategy, placement and retention.

Job Duties

Development: (mentoring, coaching, and ongoing CM Global Development programs)

  • Work with desk managers and TP professionals to determine training and development needs and share with the CM Global Learning team

  • Manage the orientation, training and placement into the rotational program all incoming junior professionals (including lateral hires if appropriate)

  • Ensure that professionals have access to best in class skills, tools and processes necessary to deliver outstanding service and to meet business objectives

  • Act as a trusted advisor and mentor and partner with the Rotational Managers and junior professionals to develop relevant career development paths

  • Play a key role in providing ongoing management to the junior professionals to include conducting performance reviews through the mid and end of each rotation, participating in review committees and determining individual compensation recommendations in partnership with Program Sponsor as part of the TP Rotational Intern Program.

  • Work closely with internal and external partners to operate a ‘best–in-class’ CM Global Learning program which supports all hires including but not limited to campus hires, experienced professionals, summers, co-op placements and scholarship interns throughout their careers (intern-new hires-ongoing)

  • External career outplacement support if unsuccessful with securing a full time TP placement at the completion of intern’s rotational program

Recruitment & On Boarding: (some seasonal campus hiring ongoing talent pipeline)

  • Build strong relationships with all internal Talent Acquisition partners (including CRT) and HR, to manage the CM business recruitment strategy and execution in partnership with the BMO CM Global Learning team

  • Ensure that diversity initiatives are reinforced in the management of the recruitment strategy

  • Partner with CM Campus Recruiting team in HR to develop and maintain an effective applicant pipeline

  • Work with I&CB PD Leads and relevant business working committees and internal/external partners to deliver on best in class orientation and on boarding

Strategy and Planning: (ongoing)

  • Identify and ‘project manage’ areas for strategic improvement within junior professionals work environment

  • Gather and maintain knowledge of competitive marketplace and trends; provide competitive intelligence to business to ensure a ‘best in class’ advantage

  • Maintain data from all aspects of role for analysis throughout the process to identify gaps and make recommendations to improve overall program(s)

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Undergraduate or Graduate business degree preferred

  • In-depth knowledgeInvestment & Corporate Bankingkey LOBs and desks within each LOB preferred

  • Strong managerial skills

  • Energetic, motivated, solutions-oriented to retain high performing talent
