Internal growth and operational needs have created a new full-time permanent opening on the Credit team within the Capital Markets division . As a Credit Specialist, you will conduct in-depth and very complex c reditworthiness evaluations of existing and potential major counterparties to implement CMHC’s Enterprise Risk Management Policies; and lead the development and implementation of portfolio credit risk management policies and procedures. The position will also provide leading input alongside Treasury, Investments and Executive Management on credit risk management strategies and reporting, including Quarterly Risk, Financial Statements and Board Reporting.

How You Will Be Contributing

  • Performing in-depth and very complex financial analysis of rated and non-rated companies and other counterparties related to the Corporation’s insurance, securitization, outsourcing, investment and hedging activities.

  • Researching, monitoring, reporting, and providing appropriate recommendations on Securitization and Approved CMHC Counterparties in relation to compliance with program policies and relevant developments.

  • Analyzing, monitoring and managing credit exposures against derived limits, and advising appropriate staff and management on limit exceptions and counterparty credit risk management strategies.

  • Completing various daily, monthly, quarterly and annual credit risk reports.

  • Reviewing financial capacity of various proponents of CMHC’s Requests for Proposals (RFP).

  • Timely and accurate monitoring of policy compliance and financial positions for reporting to senior management and the Board.

  • Monitoring for gaps and ensuring that appropriate systems are in place for effective and efficient credit risk analysis, monitoring and reporting.

  • Verifying the correctness of credit risk exposures and accuracy of reporting.

  • Designing and implementing automated solutions to reduce the operational risk of manual error in Capital Market’s reporting, monitoring, or compliance functions.

  • Implementing financial risk metrics to reflect the economic value and risk to CMHC’s financial positions and instruments.

  • Developing or supporting the development of policies, methodologies, procedures, analytical modeling and treasury/risk management information systems.

  • Leading and participating in project initiatives requiring planning, research, and coordination of resources, relationship management and mentoring / support of team members to achieve objectives.

What We Are Looking For

  • A commitment to demonstrating CMHC’s values.

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in accounting, finance, economics, business administration or in a related field.

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience and increasing responsibilities in one of the following: capital markets or investment analysis with a focus on fundamental credit research or financial risk management, or increasing responsibility working at a public accounting firm. An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.

  • Demonstrated senior level work experience in conducting credit risk analysis in a capital markets and/or risk management environment.

  • Demonstrated work experience in l eading and participating in project initiatives as well as mentoring / supporting of team members.

  • Demonstrated work experience in conducting financial statement analysis (including Cash Forecasting & Pro Forma Modeling).

  • Demonstrated experience and skills in using f inancial modelling (such as Excel) and market information system tools (such as Bloomberg, S&P Capital IQ).

  • Knowledge of current Accounting standards and financial regulatory environments and mechanisms.

  • Extensive knowledge of financial institutions, capital markets instruments, valuation techniques, risk management methodologies, and information systems tools.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to deliver presentations and write analysis/reports for Divisional and Senior Management consumption.

  • Strong organization skills and ability to manage several ongoing and competing projects / demands.

  • Ability to interact with various levels of management in a multi-tasking, deadline oriented and team environment.


  • Post graduate degree(s) in the fields noted above and/or professional designations attesting specialty in the areas of accounting, finance, or risk management (e.g. CFA, FRM, CPA).

  • Senior work experience associated with Accounting and financial statement analysis.
