Morrison Hershfield Building Science Technologist / Project Manager in Ottawa, Ontario
Morrison Hershfield's Building Science group provides specialty engineering planning, design, construction administration, and R&D services for a vast array of building types and uses. We are currently seeking a Building Science Technologist / Project Manager to complement our Building Science team in the Ottawa Office to play a role in the delivery of new construction and rehabilitation building envelope projects, building condition assessment/evaluations, Environmental Separation consulting, testing, Building Envelope/Enclosure Commissioning, Sustainability and Energy analysis, and field services.
The work we undertake stretches from northern Manitoba to St. John's, NL, and down as far as Texas, USA. The position will require a broad range of skills and capabilities across a wide spectrum of clients, building types, and climate zones. Responsibilities will include:
Preparing contract drawings and specifications in conjunction with project team for delivery to clients.
Assisting other specialist engineering staff in the preparation of designs, design drawings, contract documents, and engineering specifications for engineering work.
Performing engineering analysis and calculations, e.g., quantities, initiating or checking design elements, etc.
Conducting building condition assessments.
Carrying out field investigation work and the diagnosis of building problems required to design building envelope or structural repairs.
Conducting in-situ air and water leakage testing of windows, curtain wall, window wall, glazed architectural structures, and cladding assemblies. Also conducting Infrared scans of buildings and assemblies.
Carrying out field review during new and/or rehabilitation construction work and report on progress and the builder's adherence to contract documentation.
Providing project management in the delivery of projects.
Delivering effective business development and client management activities.
Mentoring and training of staff on all aspects of the job.
Performing other duties associated with working in a professional consulting engineering office of over 20 highly skilled building science specialists, and over 100 multi-disciplined specialists in all aspects of engineering.
A graduate of a Building Technology or Engineering program with a Building Science option or equivalent.
P.Eng., Ing., and/or CET professional registration.
Minimum of six (6) years direct experience in consulting engineering.
Knowledge of building science and building physics, such as; thermodynamics, heat transfer, psychometrics, architectural conservation, and building structures.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD, and other engineering and office related application software.
An interest in construction, the performance of buildings, field review/investigation, and materials science.
Experience writing construction specifications.
Experience writing and reviewing construction contracts.
Experience on building construction sites.
Ability to work with a team of professionals, liaise with clients, contractors and municipal authorities.
Interest in business development/sales and project management an asset.
A strong drive for personal and professional growth and continuous learning.
Spoken and written English skills are a must. Spoken and written French skills are an asset.
