Position: Chinese Education Coordinator

Hours: 37.5 Hours per Week

Status: Temporary Full-Time

The Chinese Education Coordinator provides event planning, administrative and logistics for patient education and health promotion initiatives for Chinese patients and the community at the Toronto Western Hospital. This positions will work with 2 programs: Patient and Family Education program (Patient and Family Library) and the Asian Initiative in Mental Health (AIM).

Toronto Western Hospital sees more than 320,000 patients annually through walk-in visits and treats more than 43,000 patients in its busy Emergency department. The Patient and Family Library serves many of these patients, as well as clients referred from our community health partners. The Patient and Education Program’s goal is to enhance the patient/client experience by helping individuals become active partners in their health care, as well as being more informed about healthy life style choices. Asian Initiative in Mental Health (AIM) is an outpatient mental health program at Toronto Western Hospital that helps people from the Chinese community cope with mental health difficulties. AIM's services accommodate the Chinese language and culture.


  • At minimum, university degree in related disciplines such as social service, psychology, adult education, or health promotion or recognized equivalent

  • At minimum 1 to 2 years of practical and related experience in a hospital/healthcare setting

  • Experience planning events and being a community collaborator

  • Knowledge of mental health issues

  • Knowledge of principles of Adult Education and Health Literacy

  • Additional Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent in verbal and written English and Cantonese or/ and Mandarin

  • Efficient Chinese typesetting skills and creating newsletter

  • Willingness to work flexible hours such as evenings or weekends

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines required

  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance with UHN standards

  • Exercise initiative and good judgment with ability to multi-task

  • Compliance with confidentiality requirements

  • Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills

  • Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or departmental policies

  • Client service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand

  • Performs cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned or requested
