Reports to: Senior Director, Risk & Radiation Safety/ Corporate Radiation Safety Officer

Status: Permanent Full-Time

The UHN Radiation Safety Office is a dynamic team, committed to continually raising safety awareness, improving radiation safety standards, participating in decision making and consultation, providing timely and effective responses, and creating/sustaining an environment that inspires trust, integrity, collaboration and personal responsibility.

The Health Physicist plays a key role in this team, dedicated to ensuring that this commitment is sustained and is the expert responsible for assessing risk and ensuring the safety of staff, patients, their family and the public by recommending practices to keep exposures to radiation As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Managing University Health Network Corporate Radiation Safety Program and ensuring compliance with federal regulatory requirements and licenses

  • Completion of hazards and technical reviews and assessment reports

  • Ensuring and promoting theoretical and technical competence to Radiation Safety Specialists

  • Applying program related expertise and knowledge to all applications of radiation (including x-ray) applications

  • Acting as the Class II Radiation Safety Officer

  • Ensuring compliance with federal regulatory requirements and applicable licenses

  • Managing and implementing UHN’s radiation safety training program

  • Performing program implementation, risk management, emergency/incident response and Continuous Quality Improvement responsibilities

  • Using innovative approaches to implement radiation safety at UHN, develop multidisciplinary professional and community relationships while effectively demonstrating a leadership role consistent with being Canada’s largest non-nuclear licensee

Qualifications:

  • At minimum a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Radiation Physics, Medical Physics, Nuclear Physics, or Engineering

  • Demonstrated experience in a Radiation Safety environment

  • Minimum 2-3 years related experience recommending practices to reduce exposure to radiation

  • COMP, Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists

  • CRPA, ABHP (American Board of Health Physics) as required
