Reporting to the Professional Practice Leader, Nursing, the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is accountable for utilizing the application of scientific principles for the identification, prevention, remediation, research, and rehabilitation of acute or chronic cardiopulmonary dysfunction thereby producing optimum health and function as they relate to the organization’s vision and strategic plan.

The RRT will achieve these accountabilities through consultation, collaboration, partnerships, direct/indirect practice, role modeling, mentoring/coaching and influencing change. He/she will review existing data, collect additional data, and recommend obtaining data to evaluate the respiratory status of patients, develop and share the respiratory care plan, and determine the appropriateness of the prescribed therapy. The RRT demonstrates appropriate interpersonal skills to work productively with patients, families, staff, and co-workers; accepts directives, maintains confidentiality, does not discriminate, and upholds Providence Healthcare values as well as the ethical standards of the profession.


  • Participates in unit rounds, and in teaching sessions related to Respiratory Therapy for members of the interprofessional team including physicians, nurses, physiotherapists etc.;

  • Provides respiratory education and follow up for patients related to disease process, medication use and strategies for management of disease processes such as Asthma, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, sleep disordered breathing etc.;

  • Monitors and assesses noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (BiPAP, CPAP) devices;

  • Monitors, assesses and supports care plan development with tracheotomy tubes, including interventions such as trach care and maintenance;

  • Assesses monitors and participates in care plan development to ensure safe oxygen titration and management;

  • Performs all necessary testing to determine patient’s eligibility for Home Oxygen therapy and interpretation of test results to determine patient’s oxygen prescription at rest, sleep and on exertion as per Provincial guidelines in order to facilitate safe and timely discharge from hospital;

  • Liaises with home care partners to facilitate seamless patient transition from hospital to home;

  • Responds to all ERT and Code Blue calls when on duty to see if respiratory support is needed for airway management or supports and to evaluate and coach the ERT team to excellence;

  • Supports patient centered and end of life patient care through consultation and assessment with interprofessional staff;

  • Participates in activities that facilitates and meets the educational needs of patients, students, and members of the health care team in a clinical setting;

  • Collaborates with interprofessional team members to identify educational programs for the staff and other health care professionals;

  • Recognized as clinical experts actively participating in the education of physicians, nurses and other Interprofessional team members related to respiratory therapy practice, polices and specialty interventions;


  • Degree/diploma in Respiratory Therapy or graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy program;

  • Knowledge of Chronic Disease Prevention Model and Self Management Program;Current registration and in good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario as a RRT;

  • Registration with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (preferred);

  • Registration with the Respiratory Therapy Society of Ontario (preferred);

  • Certified Respiratory Educator (CRE);

  • Knowledge of applicable legislative, hospital, and/or departmental policies;

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a RRT in a community and acute care setting;

  • Current CPR;

  • Ability to perform without direct supervision;

  • Ability to work in a team focused healthcare environment;

  • Excellent teaching skills with the ability to teach one-on-one and/or groups required;

  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner required;

  • Excellent decision-making, problem solving and time management skills required;
