Position: Recreation Therapist

Site: Toronto Rehab, University Centre

Reports to: Manager, Program Services

Scale/Grade: D0:05

Hours: 37.5 hours per week Days including weekends

Status: Temporary full-time approx. 8 months


The Recreation Therapist is an integral member of Geriatric Psychiatry. Principal responsibilities include: performing comprehensive assessments of patients and plan individual and group interventions to meet the needs of patients with dementia; collaborating in an inter-professional environment in providing patient focused care; contributing to program planning and development; planning, implementing and evaluating Recreation Therapy interventions; complying with, and commitment to, patient safety responsibilities and corresponding hospital plans, policies and procedures in order to ensure a safe environment for patients.


  • Baccalaureate degree in Recreation and Leisure studies with a major/emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation OR Baccalaureate degree in a related field (Kinesiology, Physical Education, Psychology or Health Studies) PLUS a post-diploma in Therapeutic Recreation

  • Membership in either a Provincial, National, State or International Therapeutic Recreation Professional Association

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Level C, Healthcare Provider

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in the practice of Therapeutic Recreation in a health care setting preferred

  • Expertise in planning, implementation and evaluation of Therapeutic Recreation interventions

  • Experience in working with patients who have moderate to severe dementia an asset

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

  • Sound judgment and ability to work independently and in a team setting

  • Ability to facilitate and work with Volunteers

  • Computer proficiency preferred
