University of Waterloo Marketing & Recruitment Coordinator, Engineering in Canada

This position reports to the Associate Director, Marketing and Communications, Advancement Unit in the Faculty of Engineering, with responsibility for print and online content development, social media content development and analysis, and event support for the Faculty of Engineering. The role of the Marketing and Recruitment Co-ordinator aligns to the strategic direction and goals of the Faculty of Engineering, and works collaboratively with central Marketing and Undergrad Recruitment, the Engineering Graduate Studies Office and across the faculty’s Advancement team.

The Marketing and Recruitment Co-ordinator is a content creation and management specialist. The Co-ordinator works as an Advancement team member to support the development and execution of the Faculty’s annual marketing and recruitment plans, developing student-centred undergraduate and graduate communications, such as print pieces, web content, and new media initiatives (e.g., digital advertising), and day to day operations of social media platforms for the faculty. The Co-ordinator supports both the undergraduate and graduate efforts to ensure integrated marketing and enrolment efforts are in alignment with the Faculty’s Strategic Plan.

Marketing and Recruitment Plan Development

  • Support the development of the Faculty of Engineering’s annual marketing and recruitment plans, focusing on attracting qualified applicants and strengthening the reputation of engineering at the University of Waterloo.

  • In association with the Marketing and Undergraduate Recruitment Specialist and Graduate Recruitment Officer, support the development and execution of marketing action plans for all print, web, technology and social media initiatives.

  • Determine means to measure and evaluate success with key metrics established in consultation with the Marketing and Undergraduate Recruitment Specialist and Graduate Recruitment Officer.

  • Stay up-to-date through reading, research, and conferences on best practices in marketing and communications, and the most effective methods to recruit the highest quality of students to Engineering’s programs.

Event Support

  • Plan and manage social media content for Advancement events and activities.

  • Participate in a range of campus events, such as Open Houses and Reunion, as a means to represent Engineering on social media platforms.

  • Create copy, digital templates, invitations and marketing materials to assist in the promotion of engineering recruitment events.

  • Ensure inclusion of appropriate key messages and compliance with established University communication guidelines.

  • Conduct campus tours as required.

Content Development


  • Develop creative briefs for print materials in collaboration with the Undergraduate Recruitment Specialist or Graduate Recruitment Officer, aligned with overall recruitment strategies.

  • Provide copy writing for communications based on creative briefs, in alignment with the University’s positioning framework, and ensure that these initiatives depict high-quality and innovation, such as the Undergraduate Faculty brochure, Graduate Research brochure, Offer of Admission flyers, etc.

  • Project management of recruitment print materials, including coordination with University Marketing and Strategic Initiatives, Creative Services to ensure final delivery and meet time line expectations.

  • Involvement in photography selections and direction, including support at photoshoots.

Web and Technology:

  • Based on the Faculty’s marketing and recruitment plans, conduct day to day operations for social media platforms, writing and maintaining content and ongoing audience engagement.

  • Optimize web content, utilizing Google Analytics, to enhance the user experience for a range of audiences.

  • Work closely with the Faculty’s six Engineering departments and the School of Architecture to develop and maintain effective and relevant recruitment content.

  • Develop additional technology-related initiatives (e.g chats, webinars, etc.).

  • Deliver and monitor social networking initiatives, in collaboration with the Web and Digital Communications Officer.

Committees and Meetings

  • Attend undergraduate and graduate department planning meetings to inform, guide, and make recommendations as they relate to academic recruitment communications.

  • Build relationships with Faculty stakeholders (faculty, staff, current students, and alumni) and educate on the Faculty’s key value propositions and on the importance of a student-centred approach to recruitment.


  • Support training for MUR liaison officers, Engineering student ambassadors and others involved in delivering recruitment initiatives with direction from the Marketing and Undergraduate Recruitment Specialist and the Graduate Recruitment Officer.

  • Support internal team members in the use and application of social media platforms aligned with strategic goals.

  • University undergraduate degree in communications or marketing or a communications-related discipline.

  • Excellent writing abilities, including promotional writing focused at a student audience, with a demonstrated track record for success.

  • Strengths in social media strategic planning, content development, implementation and thorough campaign analysis. Should be personally active in a range of social media channels.

  • Experience with online content marketing strategies and best practices for web writing.

  • At least 3 years of experience in marketing and/or communications role with direct experience in developing digital marketing strategies with concise, achievable and measurable goals.

  • Experience in video creation.

  • Experience working with designers and photographers.

  • Knowledge of student recruitment marketing and enrollment management principles.

  • Understanding of quantitative and qualitative research, and the ability to assess data to make informed recommendations.

  • Ability to build consensus and foster positive teamwork among a variety of stakeholders.

  • Excellent presentation skills.

  • Advanced experience with web content development, online marketing tools, social media platforms and project management software.

  • Knowledge of graphics software such as Adobe Creative Suite for creating images for the web.
