University of Waterloo Marketing Specialist - Advocacy in Canada

The incumbent will be responsible for setting the yearly marketing plan for Federations of Students (FEDS) advocacy initiatives including academic and government related topics as well as other advocacy priorities set out by the Executive, Council and Board to ensure strategies are in place to communicate the Federations of Students efforts and accomplishments to students and further engage students with this platform. They will take a lead role in the yearly FEDS Elections process and be responsible for educating students about the candidates and increasing student participation and voter turnout. To achieve these objectives, the incumbent will propose and manage a budget of approximately $20,000 annually.

To achieve the above, this role will work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications, VP Education, President and other internal staff to prioritize organizational initiatives and bring them to the forefront with students. This will also include managing and part time staff of designers and promotional team members to create materials and spread the word to the undergraduate population.

Strategic planning and budgeting

  • Create a yearly marketing and communications plan for the advocacy portfolio

  • Create marketing plans to increase voter turnout for FEDS Elections and any government elections that arise

  • Develop strategies to increase attendance at regular Federation of Students assemblies including General Meetings and Student Council Meetings

  • Develop key messaging for use in all print and online communications surrounding advocacy efforts

  • Work with the Web Design Specialist and Communications and Media Relations Specialist to determine an online communications plan for FEDS Elections and other advocacy efforts

  • Conduct market research regularly to gauge current student understanding and interest in this portfolio and determine what issues are important to students that can help direct our efforts moving forward

  • Obtain regular feedback from students to identify the best ways to communicate with them on these information-heavy topics

  • Produce and manage yearly marketing advocacy budget

  • Report on results from all efforts to measure effectiveness of all programs and spending

Project execution

  • Manage and oversee the implementation of the yearly marketing plans for advocacy efforts and FEDS Elections

  • Manage the design and copy for marketing and communications materials related to the advocacy portfolio

  • Help increase online engagement around FEDS advocacy initiatives and external government elections

  • Executes large-scale marketing projects and communications campaigns aimed at various audiences

  • Increase capacity to mobilize students on important issues

  • Help with the on-campus coordination of all campaigns within the Vice-President Education portfolio

  • Assist in planning annual OUSA Campus Visits and OUSA-related activities on campus

  • Take lead on special projects pertaining to advocacy and the Executive portfolios, develop new proposals and create roll out plans to implement new organizational initiatives

Collaboration and outreach

  • Liaise with OUSA Director of Communications and other off campus partners to conceive, strategize and execute projects/campaigns

  • Provide direction to the Communications and Media Relations Specialist to ensure integration of overall marketing and promotional plans with digital media strategies

  • Hire, train and manage a team of at least eight student designers, promotional team members and campus coordinators

  • Implement an effective recruitment plan for part time staff, manage their payroll information and ensure appropriate levels of staff are available to respond to the Federation’s requests

  • Create an opportunity for leadership and development whenever possible within the part time staff

  • Liaise with department staff and partners and ensures satisfaction at all stages of design implementation

  • Collaborate with other marketing professionals on and off campus to ensure best practice development

Relationship management

  • Meet with relevant full time staff, student executives, board and council to stay up to date on hot topics and upcoming initiatives and stay connected to maintain open lines of communication

  • Create strong relationships with other key departments on campus to identify opportunities for collaboration to increase communication and enhance resources available to students on campus

  • Form strategic alliances with other post-secondary institutions and external organizations acceptable to the Federation of Students

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or equivalent education and/or experience

  • 3+ years of experience within a marketing role

  • 1 or more years of experience supervising, evaluating and developing part-time employees

  • Written and verbal communication skills; excellent editing skills

  • Strategic planning and project management skills

  • Experience with the design and implementation of successful product-branding strategies

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and meet strict deadlines

  • Experience within a student environment is an asset

  • Demonstrated ability to relate to University student experiences

  • Experience building strong relationships with internal and external partners

  • Solid understanding of all levels of government and the elections process is an asset

  • Advanced experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Design Suite, Social Media and other Internet applications
