Job Title: Occupational Health & Safety Advisor
Work Site: Vancouver General Hospital Offices
Status: Temporary Full Time
As an Occupational Health and Safety Advisor, your role is to promote a safety culture in order to eliminate occupational injuries and illness.
Key Accountabilities include, but will not be limited to:
Engaging staff, managers and senior leaders in the analysis of staff safety data and supporting them in the development of action plans to address issues
Preventing and reducing the occurrence of workplace injuries by supporting effective investigation of accidents/injuries, providing analysis and interpretation of unusual conditions/safety concerns and providing recommendations to prevent future occurrences (education, discipline, etc)
Participating on the entity management team as the safety champion providing updates regarding the corporate safety program, performance at the local level and consistently promoting the fact that health and safety results in quality and safe patient care and improved organizational performance
Monitoring performance regarding compliance with the VCH safety program and providing reports and recommendations regarding achievement of safety standards (incidents, inspections, WSBC orders, etc.)
Reviewing safety reports and, as needed, assisting managers to develop action plans to address issues
Representing VCH in dealing with regulatory agencies such as Worksafe BC and liaising with area specific WSBC officers
Promoting employee safety awareness through on-going education and training throughout the health authority including work site inspections and accident investigations
Providing input into the development of OH&S policies and programs to support organizational safety and wellness goals and developing procedures based on these policies and programs
Developing programs that focus on prevention to eliminate or effectively control risks identified in the health care setting
Advising local joint occupational Health and Safety committees and assisting them to fulfill their role as determined under the Workers Compensation Act and Regulations
Overseeing the development and delivery of Joint Occupational Health and Safety committee education
Education and Experience:
Graduation from a two-year diploma program in Occupational Health & Safety from a recognized institution
A minimum of five (5) years of professional Occupational Health & Safety experience in a unionized healthcare environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
Knowledge and Skills
Relevant education and training in occupational health and safety
A strong understanding of applicable legislation and regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety including demonstrable experience in:
Canadian Radiation Safety
WorksafeBC Claims Process
Excellent verbal and written communication skills combined with strong and engagement and facilitation skills and the ability to use influencing skills to change behaviours and affect outcomes
Strong computer literacy in MS Office products including Excel, Power Point, and Word
Experience in the use of safety systems
