Job Title: Residential Care Nurse (Purdy Pavilion)

Work Site: Purdy Pavilion - UBC Hospital

Status: Regular Full Time - Vacation Relief-Permanent (1.00 FTE)

Start Date: As Soon As Possible

Salary: $32.33 - $42.45 per hour

Hours: 0700-1500/2300-0700 with rotating days off

JOB SUMMARY:

Practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice and code of ethics as outlined by the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC) or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of British Columbia (CRPNBC) as well as within a resident and family centred care model and the vision and values of the organization. Provides nursing care to predominantly older residents in a continuing care setting, both by working independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Enhances quality of life from the perspective of the resident/family. Consults, confers, and collaborates with other health care givers. Demonstrates expertise and leadership in nursing practice. Maintains and advances clinical competence. Participates on designated hospital committees/teams and approved research projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience

Current practicing registration with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC) or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of British Columbia (CRPNBC). Completion of an approved gerontology course or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge & Abilities

Broad knowledge of nursing theory and practice within a resident/family centred model of care.

Broad knowledge of CRNBC’s or CRPNBC’s standards for nursing practice.

Broad knowledge of the physical adaptations required to accommodate the frail elderly and/or physically impaired resident population.

Broad knowledge of theories and systems of family dynamics and end-of-life issues.

Demonstrated ability in nursing practice related to the frail elderly, cognitively impaired and/or physically impaired resident population.

Demonstrated ability to plan and implement plans of care in relation to resident/family priorities.

Demonstrated ability to assess resident responses to care, and to respond appropriately.

Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events, problem-solve and set priorities.

Demonstrated ability to deal with conflict situations.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Demonstrated ability to communicate with, and deal effectively with, residents and their families, coworkers, physicians, other health care staff, and staff of outside agencies.

Demonstrated ability to counsel and teach residents and their families based on their priorities.

Demonstrated ability to provide leadership through initiative and independence.

Demonstrated ability to model and mentor new staff and students.

Demonstrated skill in the use of medical equipment and supplies appropriate to the designated clinical area.

Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.

Demonstrated skill in techniques appropriate to the designated clinical area.

Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment.

Basic computer literacy to operate a computerized patient care information system.

Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
