Responsible for the design of concrete formwork, false work and structural design of other temporary work and facilities as required for the Keeyask Generating Station project. The Keeyask Generating Station is a large scale hydro project located near Gillam in Northern Manitoba, and the design work carried out under this position is for civil works of the project that include the Powerhouse and Spillway heavy concrete structures. This position will be based at the project office in Winnipeg MB. Other duties include interpreting structural design drawings and specifications, verification of materials and providing technical direction to construction field engineers and supervisors for the formwork of the concrete structures, and design coordination.

Receives technical and operational guidance from assigned Project Engineer, Field Engineering Manager and Lead Field Engineer.

B. Supervision Exercised

Provides technical and administrative direction to the project drafting group for the development of the drawings and other design documents.

C. Contacts

Office contacts within the project office in Winnipeg include other design engineers and drafters.

Jobsite contacts include field engineering, construction managers, field engineers, superintendents and the customer’s resident engineering and operating personnel to coordinate related engineering activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • A member of good standing of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba APEGM.

  • Originates and develops the design drawings and calculations for the formwork and falsework design that is required for heavy mass concrete, custom curved formwork for the concrete of the Powerhouse units, and formwork for the Powerhouse and Spillway piers.

  • Originates and develops the design for stair towers, elevated access platforms and walkways that are required for the construction activities.

  • Establishes the requirements and develops the designs for the formwork supports, supports for embedded gate guides, and other heavy embedded items that require support prior to the placement of concrete.

  • Directs the drafters to prepare and develop the engineering drawings for the described scope of work.

  • Responsible for signing and sealing the design drawings and calculations as required by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba APEGM.

  • Review, checking and certification of the designs prepared by pier Structural Engineers on the project following the project procedure for development of engineering drawings for formwork and temporary works.

  • Establishes Design-Field Engineering working relationship and lines of communication with the Field Engineering Management and Lead Field Engineer including agreement on the priorities and the engineering deliverables.

  • Responsible for quantity take-off, control, reporting and forecasting of material required to implement the design of temporary works.

  • Coordinates and monitors the interfacing between the formwork, falsework and supports design with the design by other engineers and subcontractors of different embedded items such as, but not limited to, embedded piping, embedded grounding and circuits.

  • Assists in preparation of cost estimates for construction activities and coordinates the preparation of cost reports, forecast and progress reports. Reviews and provides input to project controls documents on progress relating to quantities, cost and schedule.

  • Ensures the implementation of the project construction procedures from the Standard Work Process Procedures and coordinates any deviations.

  • Coordinates with the construction area managers, superintendents and subcontractors to plan the construction activities requirements for temporary works design and establishes schedules.

  • Assists in the preparation of requisitions for field procured materials, material substitution, services and equipment required for the construction of the designed facilities. Approves requisitions as delegated by the Project Field Engineer.

  • Plans and recommends procedures to be implemented by superintendents to ensure construction operations are within requirements of engineering design.

  • Directs the maintenance of construction engineering records for job history.

  • Works with customer’s resident engineering and operating personnel to coordinate the design of the temporary works.

  • Implements controls over variables affecting job progress to ensure engineering and timely delivery of drawings, materials and equipment required for the temporary facilities.

  • Performs employee reviews for subordinate personnel and assists in their development. Ensures that subordinate personnel receive progressive training.

  • Ensures the implementation of project environmental control plan(s) as required.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:

  • Technical knowledge of all phases of design for formwork, falsework and other temporary works and relevant engineering activities relating to all areas on the project.

  • 5-10 Year Experience in the design of formwork, falsework and temporary works for construction activities as described.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the applicable codes and standards and requirements of the Project Technical specifications that are related to the design of the described work and structural design in general.

  • Thorough knowledge of construction activities as they relate to the engineering discipline, cost and scheduling, and contract administration.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the application and requirements of the Project Environmental, Safety & Health (ES&H) procedures as they relate to area of responsibility.

  • Knowledge of project-specific environmental compliance requirements.

  • Familiar with Business Ethics and Policies.

  • Commitment to a “Zero Accidents” safety program.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A recognized degree in Structural/Civil engineering or related scientific discipline, AND

  • Specialized courses in the design of construction temporary works and facilities, AND

  • Actual work experience leading to a thorough understanding of the technical knowledge described above.
